Dear Readers,

If all breeders, exhibitors, handlers, dog judges – and, by and large, everyone closely or remotely involved in the FCI’s dog shows and championships – know the exact denomination of our large federation, and even have knowledge of the city and country that are home to its global headquarters, not so long ago, not many inhabitants of Thuin and its neighbouring localities knew about the FCI and its corporate name. But things have changed a lot! The most significant burst in our local promotion scheme took place with the celebration of our Centenary in 2011, when our city was elevated to the status of Thuin, World Capital of Dogs. The latest large-scale campaign was conducted on the occasion of the inauguration of the new extension to our offices in 2015.

European Cup for Hounds, Zadar (Croatia) - 14-15 October 2016

Croatia hosted the 24th European Cup for Hounds, together with associated meeting of the FCI Commission for Hounds of the 6th Group. This event took place in beautiful Zadar, precisely at the tourist facility in Borik, which traditionally is a basis for all important canine events, from hunting to shows.

This European Cup had 18 individual competitors from 9 countries and 3 packs from two countries. Besides these competitors, we also hosted the judges for this event, in total 42 of them.

On Friday afternoon, October 14th, there was an opening ceremony in the hotel park. The programme consisted of a presentation of all teams per country, where they - along with national anthem and flag - greeted all the judges, invited guests and other competitors. This was followed by a cocktail party, dinner and mingling of all participants.

In the morning before the opening, the annual meeting of the FCI Commission for Hounds was held.

Mr Curt-Christer Gustafsson, after 20 years as the President of the Commission, thanked all members for their trust over such a long period of time, after which a new president was elected: Mr GianCarlo Bosio from Italy. Vice-president of the Commission is Mr Manfred Pircher from Switzerland, while the secretary is Mr Giovanni Brumana.

In the very early morning of Saturday, October 15th, the competitors and the judges headed for over 21 terrains, so that the competition began precisely at 8 o’clock. They worked on very specific grounds of our region, with a lot of bedrock and sparse vegetation, but very rich with the number of hares. Hunting grounds stretched from the island of Pag all the way to the western suburb of Zadar, in the range of approximately 70 kilometers.

In the afternoon, according to the protocol, a meeting of all judges was held, where they confirmed the winners. They were announced and awarded during the joint dinner, later in the evening. Two hounds got a 1st prize, three hounds got 2nd prize while five hounds got a 3rd prize.

The Croatian Kennel Club presented the flag of the European Cup for Hounds to the next organiser, the Kennel Club of Montenegro. The cup will be held in late September, in the surroundings of Podgorica.

Comment of Dr Giovanni Brumana, Secretary of the FCI Commision for Hounds of the 6th Group:

“I thank the Croatian kennel club for the nice hospitality and kindness to me, but especially towards all participants and all the judges.

I found the organisation to be very good, good hunting grounds (though difficult), where it was possible to make a difference and bring out the best.

The very complicated logistical support was flawless. There were some small misunderstanding, but not due to the kennel club, but to the problem of so many linguistic differences.

I have to make my compliments to the entire organisation. Despite the fact that this was the first bigger event of such an importance since Croatian kennel club has got a new president, they’ve done a wonderful job.

The new President of the FCI Commission for Hounds, Dr Giancarlo Bosio, and I thank you all once again and we hope that in the future it will be possible to repeat European Cup in Croatia.

Please take my compliments and best regards.”
